TIPS FOR PACKING

Mexico is a tropical country. The beaches enjoy high temperatures year round, even during rainy season.

Toluca is the exception that proves the rule. Since it is high in the central mountain region it is relatively cool all year round. In addition, the symposium is during rainy season which means the mornings will be quite hot (±24°C or X°F) but the afternoons can get quite chilly if it rains (±14°C or X°F). This makes it quite a challenge to pack for a weekend in Toluca. Minimally, do not forget an umbrella and a light rainproof jacket.

Health and security

While we do not wish to create the impression that Mexico is a dangerous country it would be wise to observe these safety measures during your stay.

Transport

If you fly into Mexico City airport:

If you arrive before 23:00 you should make your way to the intercity bus area located between national and international departures. Here you will find a bus service (run by the Caminante company <www.tmt-caminante.com>). This bus takes you straight to Toluca in 1½ - 2 hours depending on the traffic. Upon arrival in Toluca it may be a good idea to make your reservation for this bus service to take you to the airport when you end your stay in Toluca.

Service timetable:

Mexico City to Toluca: every hour from 07:30 to 23:30
Toluca to Mexico City: every hour from 04:00 to 20:00

Cost: MX$100

Taking a taxi in Mexico City

If you arrive in Mexico City after the last bus leaves you should take a taxi al the way to Toluca or wait for the first bus out the next morning. Only take taxis from the authorized service rank within the airport itself. Do not flag down a taxi on the street. If you should need to take a taxi on the street in Mexico City for any reason it is important to check that the license plate or registration number coincides with the number painted on the side of the vehicle. Additionally, you should check that your driver is the same handsome fellow whose photo is on the card hanging from the car dashboard. If any of these elements are missing, do not get into the taxi. The taxi driver is a pirate, which sounds like fun, but it isn’t.

Taxi drivers in Mexico City will charge you either a set fee (for taxis taken from an official rank in the airport or a large bus station) or will use their taximeter.

Taking a taxi in Toluca

Similar rules apply to those taking taxis in Toluca with the notable exception that drivers do not have to carry photo IDs. An additional danger in Toluca is created by the fact that taximeters are not currently in use, this basically allows the taxi driver to charge whatever he likes. Don’t let them get away with this. For any trip within downtown Toluca you should never be charged more than MX$50. If your Spanish is less than fabulous then just give the driver a fifty at the end of the journey and accept any change he gives you. Smile and be pleasant!!

Altitude Issues

Toluca is an incredible 2,660 metres (8,727 feet) above sea level. This may have minor adverse effects on your health. If you have a blood pressure or a cardiac condition do not forget to pack your medicine. Please consult with your doctor before you leave.

Altitude sickness:

Classic symptoms of altitude sickness are tiredness and dizziness.

Classic remedies are sugary drinks and/ or a shot of tequila.

Please be advised that the altitude in Toluca may affect anyone: not just the elderly and infirm. If you feel faint or dizzy, do not assume it will pass or that it is due to travel fatigue. Your stay will be much more comfortable if you remedy this minor problem with a sugary drink.
